blog: a full review of mr sushi

much praise for a beloved sushi restaurant

Mr. Sushi is a dinner restaurant in Arlington, MA serving Korean and Japanese cuisine in a cozy, almost cafe-like atmosphere. I can’t help feeling like I’m over at my grandmother’s house being treated to a wonderful meal. It is also one of my all-time favorite restaurants, and since it has just now opened its dining room to the public, I would like to take the time to write a full review.

I am a big fan of Mr. Sushi, and it’s my go-to when I’m craving sushi, bibimbap, and japchae.

I know I can always count on the sushi being fresh and delicious. The fish and vegetables are always fresh and the rice is consistently perfectly seasoned and freshly cooked. It’s even still warm when it reaches your table.

I always order spicy salmon maki and shrimp tempura maki, no matter what else I order. The tempura is immaculately crunchy and never greasy.

If I want to have some special big rolls, I especially love super dragon maki, anna maki, winter hill maki.

The sushi portions are more generous than other places in the area; over the past 10 years or so, the size of sushi, particularly maki, has been waning. But not at Mr. Sushi! It’s one of the many things that keeps me coming back to Mr. Sushi time and time again.

They don’t sacrifice quality (cough, S***, cough) or quantity (cough, C**** ***) or even drive their prices through the roof like every other restaurant seems to be doing. I understand that keeping a restaurant afloat in the Boston area is no picnic, but damn. But Mr. Sushi’s consistently large portions and high-quality sushi at reasonable prices? That’s respect for the craft!

can i make bibimbap at home?
yeah.
but will it have this many components?
will it be made with this much care?
will it taste like LOVE???
I didn’t think so.

I also very much love the kopdol bibimbap here. If I want bibimbap, I make a bee-line for that maroon awning. What is more comforting to the soul than piping hot bibimbap with thinly sliced beef, soft and crispy rice, tender vegetables, and crunchy sides. It really is everything you want it to be.

Super delicious, bunch of generous sides, nice beef, nice kimchi. If you’re not a meat guy, the tofu is also great! I wish the egg was less cooked, but I know that’s probably a choice to cater to Americans.

tofu time!
the classic beef

This dish is great if you’re dining in, but honeslty, I wouldn’t get this dish as take out. This isn’t just for obvious reasons such as the fact that you don’t get the crispy rice, but also because they mix all the ingredients together in the container, which i think completely completes the point of the bibimbap. I ordered this as take out 3 separate times when their dining room was closed during covid. I kept ordering it, expecting it them to decide that that was a poor idea, but i guess their take out bibimbap is just this way. So dine in for this dish definitely!

Nobody’s perfect. Except beef japchae. He’s perfect.

The beef japchae here is also super delicious.

It’s everything i want in beef japchae, and it is consistently as such. Indulgently sweet and savory with perfectly chewy glass noodles and thinly sliced vegetables with chompy onions. I cannot express how perfect it is. Perfect every time. Thank you for your service.

my go-to sushi order

Saba shioyaki is wonderful! Nabeyaki udon and yaki chicken udon are great!

All and all, I love Mr. Sushi very much. When my friends come to visit from out of town, I often take them here because I know the food is going to be good, I know the people there are wonderful, and I know the atmosphere will have healing levels of comfort.

these sides don’t come with beef bulgogi. they were gifted to me by a picky person 😂

i love experimenting with food. i like to develop new recipes or optimize old ones and share them with my friends. i love playing with restrictions, such as avoiding allergens, designing low-budget recipes, or formulating few-ingredients recipes.

as a chinese-american growing up in the boston area, i learned to cook mostly chinese, japanese, italian, and american food when i was younger. i also learned a lot of techniques from my indian, italian, brazilian, chinese, and greek friends. they’ve all helped me grow a lot as a cook!

i hope you can find something you love on my page!
